Lights, camera, action

"Home makeover shows are popular reality TV programs where some aspect of the home is drastically changed to the bewilderment, joy or horror of the home owners."

That's an official definition from jobmonkey.com, in a section of the site dedicated to people who want to work on or appear upon a reality TV show.

I bring this up because we had our first visit from the Remodel It TV crew this week. I admit, the term "crew" may be a bit of an exaggeration. There was no hair stylist, no makeup artist, and no stage designer to prepare the set (aka our home...)  There was just a couple of guys with a handheld camera and a few extra lights.

In any case, this milestone has generated much discussion among family and friends who appear to be secretly hoping to see one or more of the following occur on the Opseth edition of the show...

  • Heather and Lyle having intense arguments over the bathroom fixtures
  • Heather and Lyle being horrified at over-the-top post-modern design decisions made by the show's staff without their consent
  • Heather taking cheap shots at her husband over his taste in shag carpet in candid behind the scenes interviews
  • Lyle being nasty about his wife's taste in paint colours in candid behind the scenes interviews
  • Heather and Lyle dealing with their renovation stress by taking swings at each other with 2x4s
  • Heather and Lyle 'making up' afterwards with the hidden camera rolling

Sheesh, people! Sorry to disappoint you but our first interview contained none of the above. Lyle was nice to me. I was nice to him. The lovely TV people were nice to us. We were nice to them. (Though they declined our offer of a hot cup of coffee.)

Remodel It TV cameraman Chris Connie.
I should note, he was a good sport about being
photographed for my blog.
The biggest drama came when one of us fumbled an answer and explained very seriously that the purpose of moving our media room to the basement is to "keep the kids awake". And I hope you notice that I am being so nice about all of this, that I'm not even going to mention who said that!

The interview consisted of questions like, 'How old is your house and why are you doing this project?'  'How will this renovation change your family life?'  and 'What are your biggest concerns about the project?'  In response to these questions, Lyle talked about his awesome new surround sound setup, and I talked about the joyful anticipation of working in my new home office. We both mentioned repeatedly how much we're looking forward to all the visitors who will come and test out the new guest room this summer. (Anyone who makes further comments about our upcoming reality-reno-induced-marital-breakdown is uninvited however...)

We also gave a 'tour' of the basement highlighting what's there now (i.e., nothing) and what will be there when the job is finished (i.e., a whole new floor of the house).

So, the first interview was pretty casual and fun.

The big question is... If there is no melodrama on the Opseth edition of the show, will anyone actually  watch it?

In other news, we've got the building permits and it appears construction will begin on schedule thanks to the diligent work of the Remodelers team. Yay!

We have finished work with Shirley, the amazing millwork designer, and are meeting Diana, the interior design guru tomorrow.

I have posted some "before" photos for those who are particularly curious for details. See link in sidebar, above right.

  1. We now have a floor plan ready for submission to the city for a building permit, cabinetry designs for the bathroom and utility room, and a design for the multimedia cabinetry. They look so awesome. Thanks Paul and Shirley for jobs well done.

Later today we have our first meeting with the designer and we will look at fixtures. On other days, we will meet regarding other design aspects such as carpet, paint, baseboards, and so forth.

I have little interest in shag carpets as I always think it was so 70's even though I know short shag is coming back. I wonder if Heather's reference to shag carpets means she really wants them in the basement? Time will tell.

Tomorrow the Remodelers team shows up to load up the boxes we have in the basement and put them into storage. Things we will need frequently are being stored in the garage or crammed into cupboards in the house where we can find space.

Unfortunately, this means that my vehicle now sits on the driveway so I am the one to sweep snow and scrape frost--the sacrifices I must make for my dear wife. (Actually, I offered.)

  2. We met with Diana to select fixtures today. She had done her homework and we had a lot of fun picking faucets, sinks, bathtub, toilet, etc. With her help, we have selected some really cool items.

I'm sure Heather will post pictures of me testing display models toilet and bathtub on her blog soon. Now why didn't she get a picture of me playing with the very cool faucet for the utility sink? (The faucet is inspired by the look you see in some commercial kitchens.)
