Who is "hoptimist"?
I'm Heather Opseth, and I live in the suburbs of SW Calgary, Alberta, with my husband Lyle.
Our family
We have two boys ages 5 and 7.
Our day jobs
I'm a former journalist, now a corporate communications and human resources professional. My husband is a stay-at-home dad. Given my background, I could not resist the chance to blog about the unique experience of going through a renovation on a reality TV show.
Our reno project
We are transforming a completely bare unfinished basement into additional living space. This includes a spare bedroom for my mother and other guests, a home office for me, a media room for the whole family, and a bathroom. We also need to keep sufficient storage space for our sporting equipment and other typical basement "stuff" (Christmas decorations, boxes of books we can't bear to get rid of, beloved toys from our childhoods, etc...) We want the finished product to feel like an extension of our home, rather than, well, a cold basement with some extra walls.
What we wanted in a builder
We were looking for a full-service designer/builder/project manager to do this project for us. We were focused on quality of the finished product and a smooth, well managed process to get the job done. Several Calgary companies can offer this type of service, however we settled on The Remodelers due to their excellent track record, high customer ratings, strong references, and of course, the offer to appear on their show.
