Latest highlights in reno-land

No major news this week. Just a few tidbits to share...

Blog reaches 500 page views. I wasn't sure anyone would actually read this blog, but it turns out quite a few people are following it. Most readers are from Canada and the U.S. But if the google stats are to be believed, there are a few readers from as far away as the UK, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for reading! I enjoy your comments too, especially the puns.

Oak trim is toast.  Decision made. Contract signed. Enough said about that.

Must stop procrastinating. The first TV shoot is now scheduled...
It's only a few weeks away and I haven't started cleaning out the basement. There are just soooo many ways to avoid this loathsome task. For starters, writing blog entries. :)

I confess my husband is a bit more proactive and less of a procrastinator when it comes to this kind of drudgery. He has already cleaned out the "electronic graveyard" corner of the basement and has been busy selling some of the salvageable bits on Kijiji.

If anyone wants to help with the basement cleanup, let me just take this chance to mention I have many bottles of fine Okanagan wine in the pantry, and I am not averse to sharing. On the bright side, surely the basement cleanout has to be the absolute worst part of this whole project and it will be out of the way in the next few weeks. It can only get better from here!

Cleaning out the "electronic graveyard" allowed me to experience the differences between my generation and today's youth.

I was selling a receiver and had it listed on Kijiji. I got a phone call from someone asking whether I still had it and after I said yes, he asked if we could text. From that point on, our conversation continued via text messages: Could I make change as he only had 20 dollar bills? What's my address? and the like. Finally, I got the message "I'm on my way".

After ten minutes I got a final text that read "I'm here". I raised an eyebrow but I got up and went to the door. There he stood, less than an arm's length from the doorbell, but he still chose to text. Perhaps he can text pretty fast, but I doubt many people can text "I'm here" faster than they can press the door bell. Why use old technology when you can use the latest smartphone? (BTW, he still wore an analog wrist watch but I thought most young people have dispensed with that sort of hardware.)

I've also sent old paint cans to that paint recycling plant in the sky... May the paint reappear on someone else's walls, just not mine. (Rona takes paint for recycling.)

I've also cleaned out other stuff and put them into the recycling and garbage bins the city has provided us. Unfortunately, they only hold so much. In the past I've learned that one does not stand on the stuff in the bin to squash it down in order to get even more in. What happens is that when the bin is tipped, the contents remain in the bin and you have to wait another week for another attempt to get rid of what's in the bin. And now you have no place to put the next week's garbage.

Fortunately, The Remodelers will provide us with an industrial sized bin conveniently left on the driveway for the final purge just before renovations get seriously underway. I've got stuff ready for that day!

  2. Hoptimist's loving motherFeb 4, 2012, 2:33:00 PM

The Hoptimist is being very naive if she thinks that the basement cleanup is the worst part, espcially if her husband is doing most of it. This from Hoptimists mother who has also been through a major renovation plus two house construction projects. But I should comfort her by saying it is a lot like giving birth. The baby you have when it is all over is worth all the P and S :) Not to sound a complete pessimist, a renovation also includes a lot of fun. I will let you read the album I made of the renovation we did in Bonavista. It details (with photos) all the fun and all the hassles too.

  3. I'm hoping our renovation goes without too much stress, as my sister's seems to be. My sister's renovation is underway and there is only excitement so far as I can tell. I don't think she was totally happy with the cement dust and noise as venting holes were cut into the basement wall for the new tankless water heater but she knows the result is worth it. Of course, it is early and the work is not being done all at once. (I think the new windows are to be installed in the summer at the height of mosquito seasont. Saskatoon boasts a very healthy population of these blood sucking vampires and has a healthy population of Purple Martins and bats. How eco-green can a city get? But I digress...)

But most importantly, she has got a great work ethic. After checking her bank balance in the morning, she sings "I owe, I owe, It's off to work I go..."

  4. I should also mention that this is our second renovation project. The first was in 1998 and it went rather well.
